How to Apply for Nursing Funding in the GCC

Follow these eight steps to maximize your chances of securing employer or government scholarship support.

1

Identify Your Goal

Clarify whether you want a BSN upgrade, MSN, PhD, or specialty certification. Different goals lead to different funding sources — be specific before approaching anyone.

2

Check Your Contract

Review your employment contract for education clauses, annual CPD budget, study leave entitlements, and any existing scholarship provisions you may have overlooked.

3

Speak to Your Nurse Manager

Have a professional conversation with your nurse manager or clinical educator. Express your career goals clearly. Internal advocacy is often the most effective first step.

4

Contact HR / Education Department

Most large GCC hospitals have a dedicated Education & Training Department. Request a meeting, ask about current scholarship cycles, deadlines, and eligibility requirements.

5

Gather Your Documents

Prepare: nursing license copy, passport, performance reviews (last 2 years), degree certificates, IELTS/TOEFL if required, and a professional CV updated in the past 6 months.

6

Write a Compelling Education Proposal

Many hospitals require a written education proposal. Include: your career goals, how the qualification benefits your unit and the hospital, your study plan, and your commitment to return.

7

Submit & Follow Up

Submit your application before the deadline and follow up professionally — once at 2 weeks, then at 4 weeks if no response. Persistence without pressure is key in bureaucratic HR systems.

8

Negotiate Bond Period Conditions

Understand and negotiate the return-of-service bond before signing. Ask about pro-rating, what happens if you are made redundant, and whether the bond follows you if the hospital transfers ownership.

⚠️

Bond Period Warning — Read Before You Sign

Most employer scholarships in the GCC come with a return-to-service bond — typically 2x the study period. Leaving before bond completion means repaying tuition fees in full, sometimes with penalties. Always read this clause carefully before accepting any scholarship offer.

  • A 2-year MSN program may carry a 4-year bond — meaning you cannot leave the employer for 4 years after graduation without repaying.
  • Bond repayment can exceed SAR 100,000 / QAR 80,000 — often requiring a bank guarantee at signing.
  • Termination for performance reasons may still trigger full bond repayment in some contracts.
  • Always ask: Is the bond waived if the hospital terminates my contract?
  • Get legal advice before signing any scholarship agreement with a value above your monthly salary x 6.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most from nurses exploring GCC education funding.

Yes — many GCC nurses successfully complete BSN and even MSN programs while working full-time. Most online and blended programs are designed for working professionals, with coursework done evenings and weekends. However, you should:

  • Discuss workload flexibility with your manager before enrolling
  • Choose a program with asynchronous (self-paced) online delivery
  • Confirm whether your contract allows study leave for exams or clinical practicum days
  • Budget 10–20 hours/week of study time for most BSN/MSN programs

This varies by hospital and by the type of scholarship. For full in-person programs, many employers grant study leave (paid or unpaid) for lecture days. For online programs, reduction in hours is rare unless specifically negotiated. Key points:

  • Full-time enrolled students may receive reduced shifts — but this needs to be agreed in writing
  • Many nurses continue full 12-hour shift patterns while studying online
  • Some hospitals allow shift swapping for exam days without using annual leave
  • Negotiate any hour reductions before accepting scholarship terms

Both nationals and expats can access funding — but the options differ significantly. Government scholarships run by MOH or regulatory bodies tend to prioritize nationals. However:

  • Employer-sponsored programs at hospitals like KFSH, HMC, and CCAD are fully open to expat nurses who meet service requirements
  • NGHA's scholarship program at KSAU-HS is available to all NGHA nurses regardless of nationality
  • International fellowships (WHO, ICN, Sigma) are open to any eligible nurse working in GCC
  • Some government programs do require a minimum years of in-country service before expats qualify

Bottom line: as an expat nurse, your best funding sources are employer-based and international — not government-only programs.

Most employer scholarships cover tuition and sometimes exam fees only. Family expenses are generally not included unless you are accepted into a full national scholarship for overseas study, where some programs include:

  • Monthly living stipend (not family support)
  • Return flights (for the nurse only)
  • Accommodation in student housing

International fellowships and MOH-sponsored overseas study programs are the most likely to include stipends. Even then, family sponsorship abroad during study leave is complex under GCC visa rules — your dependents' visas may not automatically transfer.

Yes — many nurses in the GCC successfully complete degrees from UK, US, Australian, and Irish universities entirely online while living in the region. Practical considerations:

  • Ensure the university is accredited and the degree will be recognized by the relevant GCC authority (SCFHS, DHA, QCHP, etc.)
  • Check whether clinical practicum hours can be completed at your current GCC hospital with a memorandum of understanding
  • UK degrees from universities like UWE Bristol, University of Liverpool, and Open University are popular among GCC-based nurses
  • Australian and Irish online BSN/MSN programs have been recognized by SCFHS and DHA when properly attested
  • Always get pre-approval from your licensing authority before enrolling if you plan to use the degree for licensing upgrade

Your visa status while on study leave depends on your GCC country, employer, and the nature of leave. Key considerations:

  • UAE: Your employment visa remains valid as long as your employer maintains it. Unpaid study leave should be agreed in writing; your employer remains your visa sponsor.
  • Saudi Arabia: Iqama is employer-tied. Study leave must be formally documented by HR to avoid visa complications.
  • Qatar: Work permit is employer-sponsored. Extended leave abroad (more than 6 months) may require a re-entry permit.
  • If you are studying overseas for more than 6 months, arrange formal leave documentation and ensure your employer maintains your visa sponsorship.
  • Never resign and re-join — this resets your service years and may affect scholarship eligibility and end-of-service gratuity.
