How to Use This Checklist

Work Through It Stage by Stage

This checklist covers every document from the moment you apply for a GCC nursing job through to your first week on the ward. Each tick saves automatically in your browser — no account needed.

📅
Allow 3–6 months for attestation

Document authentication is the longest stage. Start Stage 2 as soon as you accept a job offer — do not wait.

🛑
CRITICAL items are non-negotiable

Items marked CRITICAL cannot be skipped or substituted. Missing one will stop your visa or license application in its tracks.

Print it, work through it offline

Use the print button at the bottom of the page. Physical checklists are useful when visiting embassies or notary offices.

Attestation Quick Reference Guide

The attestation process varies significantly by your home country. Here is the standard path for the five largest nurse-sending countries to the GCC.

⚠️
Different GCC destination = different embassy stamp UAE attestation is NOT valid for Saudi Arabia, and vice versa. If you are applying to multiple GCC countries, you will need separate embassy stamps on your documents for each destination. Plan accordingly.
🇵🇭
Philippines
Typical timeline: 6–10 weeks
1
Notarize documents at a notary public (Commission on Appointments accredited)
2
DFA Red Ribbon / Apostille — Department of Foreign Affairs. Philippines is a Hague Convention member. Apostille widely accepted for UAE and other GCC countries.
3
UAE / Saudi / Qatar Embassy Manila — stamp on apostilled documents. Different embassies for each destination country.
Key Documents for Philippines Nurses
  • PSA-issued birth certificate (not the hospital copy)
  • TOR (Transcript of Records) — sealed by CHED-recognized university
  • PRC nursing license + Board Rating / Oath Taking certificate
  • NSO marriage certificate if name changed
🇮🇳
India
Typical timeline: 8–14 weeks
1
Notarize documents at a notary public (district-level)
2
State HRD / Home Department attestation — varies by state. Kerala: Kerala Government HRD or GAD. Maharashtra: Mantralaya. Allow 3–6 weeks.
3
MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) apostille — Central Government step. India is a Hague Convention member. MEA offices in Delhi and regional centres.
4
UAE / Saudi / Qatar Embassy — New Delhi embassy or consulate (Mumbai, Chennai) for the stamp specific to your destination country.
Key Documents for Indian Nurses
  • INC registration certificate + state nursing council registration
  • Kerala nurses: Kerala State Nurses and Midwives Council certificate
  • Degree certificate from affiliated university (not just college)
  • NYSC equivalent — internship completion certificate
🇬🇧
United Kingdom
Typical timeline: 3–5 weeks
1
Apostille via FCDO — Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. UK is a Hague Convention member. Apostille is issued directly on original documents or notarized copies. Online application available.
2
GCC Embassy in London — UAE Embassy, Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, Qatar Embassy in London for destination-specific stamps if required beyond apostille.
Key Documents for UK Nurses
  • NMC Good Standing Letter / Letter of Current Registration — essential for all GCC licensing
  • University degree certificate (not nursing diploma if you hold a degree)
  • DBS certificate (Enhanced) — within 3 years preferred
  • NHS employment verification letters on NHS Trust letterhead
🇺🇸
United States
Typical timeline: 4–8 weeks
1
Notarize documents at a state-licensed notary public
2
Secretary of State apostille — state-level apostille on notarized documents. USA is a Hague Convention member. Each state has its own process and timeline (typically 1–4 weeks).
3
GCC Embassy in Washington DC — or consulate in New York, Houston, Los Angeles for destination-specific stamps. UAE, Saudi, Qatar all have embassies in DC.
Key Documents for US Nurses
  • State Board of Nursing Letter of Good Standing / Verification of License
  • NCLEX-RN Passing Report from NCSBN
  • University transcript (sealed, from registrar)
  • FBI background check (for those who need federal-level clearance)
🇳🇬
Nigeria
Typical timeline: 10–16 weeks — allow extra time
1
Notarize documents at the High Court or legal practitioner
2
NYSC Discharge Certificate — required for all degree holders. Without this, further attestation cannot proceed. Ensure it is included with educational documents.
3
Nigerian Education Commission (NEC) verification — for university degrees and transcripts. Adds 3–6 weeks. Submit early.
4
Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) — Abuja headquarters. For documents originating in Lagos, use the State Ministry before federal.
5
UAE / Saudi / Qatar Embassy Abuja — destination-specific embassy stamp to complete the chain. Allow 1–2 weeks after submission.
Key Documents for Nigerian Nurses
  • NMCN (Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria) license + Good Standing Letter
  • NYSC Discharge Certificate — non-negotiable
  • University degree + transcript from NYSC-affiliated institution
  • National ID / International Passport with at least 18 months validity

5 Document Mistakes That Cost Nurses Months

These are the most frequent — and most avoidable — errors nurses make during the GCC document process.

1

Sending original documents by post or courier

Your original nursing degree, once lost or damaged in transit, can take 6–12 months and significant cost to replace. Some universities no longer issue replacement originals.

Fix: Only send certified copies by post. Hand-deliver originals to government offices and ask for acknowledgement receipts. Store originals in a fireproof folder at home.
2

Forgetting to check passport validity in time

A passport with less than 18 months remaining will be rejected by GCC embassies, airlines, and immigration. Passport renewals can take 4–8 weeks in some countries.

Fix: Check your passport expiry the moment you decide to apply for GCC jobs. If less than 24 months remain, apply for renewal immediately. Do not wait.
3

Getting General Training IELTS instead of Academic

This is one of the most common and costly mistakes. General Training IELTS is for immigration — GCC nursing licensing bodies specifically require Academic IELTS. Your test fee and 4 weeks of preparation go to waste.

Fix: When booking IELTS, select Academic. OET is always the clinical version — no ambiguity. Double-check your booking confirmation before the test date.
4

Attesting documents for the wrong GCC country

UAE attestation chain ends at the UAE Embassy. Saudi attestation ends at the Saudi Embassy. If you are applying to Saudi Arabia but got UAE embassy stamps, you must restart from the embassy step.

Fix: Confirm your exact destination country before starting attestation. If you are applying to multiple GCC countries simultaneously, you need separate copies attested for each.
5

Police clearance certificate that is too old

Most GCC licensing authorities require a police clearance issued within 3–6 months of your application submission. A clearance you got 8 months ago when you started your job search is often no longer valid.

Fix: Apply for your police clearance only when you are ready to submit your licensing application — not months in advance. Factor in attestation time for the clearance itself.
