Why the GCC is a Traveller's Paradise

Four reasons why working in the Gulf gives you a travel advantage like nowhere else on earth.

🌍
100+
Countries Within 4–8 Hours
Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi are among the world's busiest flight hubs. Europe, East Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia are all ultra-accessible with direct, frequent and often cheap flights.
🏖️
21–30
Days Paid Annual Leave
GCC labour laws guarantee 21–30 days of paid annual leave per year depending on country and employer. Add Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha public holidays and you can string together 10–14 day trips with smart planning.
💰
Tax-Free
Nurse Salary = Strong Travel Budget
GCC nurses earn AED 8,000–18,000 / SAR 6,000–15,000 tax-free. With a lower local cost of living and no income tax, your travel budget goes significantly further than equivalent nursing roles in the UK, US or Australia.
🛂
60+
Visa-on-Arrival Countries
UAE residents enjoy visa-on-arrival or e-visa access to over 60 countries. Holders of Philippines, Indian, or other passports gain access to many countries they cannot visit from home simply by holding a valid GCC residence visa.

Smart Travel Tips for GCC Nurses

Insider knowledge specific to expat nurses working in the Gulf — save money, avoid headaches and travel smarter.

📅

Book Against the Crowd

Avoid booking flights during Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha — prices triple and planes are full. Instead, fly one week before or after. Travel to Europe in October rather than July and save 40–60% on airfare.

💸

GCC-Specific Booking Apps

Use Almosafer, Wego and Cleartrip for GCC-specific deals and Arabic airline flash sales. These platforms often beat Google Flights for regional routes and have Arabic-language promotions not listed elsewhere.

🛡️

Travel Insurance — Buy Monthly

AXA, Cigna and Allianz all offer monthly or annual multi-trip travel insurance policies starting from AED 150/year. Your employer's health insurance may NOT cover emergency evacuation abroad — a separate travel policy is essential.

🛋️

Airport Lounge Access

The Priority Pass card (from ~USD 99/year) gives access to 1,400+ lounges globally including all GCC airports. Many nurses find it pays for itself in a single long-haul trip — free meals, showers and quiet seating.

✈️

Earn Miles on Every Flight

Register for Emirates Skywards, Qatar Airways Privilege Club and Etihad Guest simultaneously. GCC nurses who fly home twice a year often reach Silver or Gold status — unlocking free upgrades, extra baggage and lounge access.

🗺️

Multi-City Tickets

Instead of flying directly home and back, book a multi-city ticket: Dubai → Bangkok → Manila → Dubai. This often costs only 20–30% more than a return Manila ticket but gives you two holidays in one. Kayak and Google Flights multi-destination search makes this easy.

💳

GCC Bank Travel Credit Cards

Emirates NBD, FAB and ADCB all offer travel credit cards with no foreign transaction fees, airport lounge passes and airline mile earn rates. These are significantly better than debit cards for overseas spending.

🌐

eSIM for International Data

Avoid expensive roaming by buying an eSIM before you land. Airalo, Holafly and Nomad offer cheap regional eSIM packages from your phone. A 10-day Southeast Asia data plan typically costs AED 50–80.

Annual Leave Strategy

GCC nurses who plan leave strategically can turn 21 days of annual leave into 35+ actual travel days by bridging public holidays and using smart rotation swaps.

1

Request 3 Months in Advance

Most GCC hospitals approve annual leave on a first-come, first-served basis. Submit your leave request 3 months ahead of Eid periods — nurses who miss this window often find leave blocked due to minimum staffing requirements.

2

Bridge Eid for 10+ Days

Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are typically 3-day public holidays. Taking 4 days of annual leave on either side can give you 10–13 consecutive days off. This is the most powerful leave strategy for GCC nurses.

3

Shift Swap Strategy

Build relationships with trusted colleagues who have different travel preferences. Swap your weekend shifts strategically — nurses who cover colleagues at Christmas often receive reciprocal cover during Eid. Keep swaps fair and documented.

4

Split Your Annual Leave

Rather than one long trip, many nurses find two medium trips (7–10 days each) more manageable for leave approval and deliver better travel experiences. One trip home, one destination holiday, per year.

SPF 50+ for beach destinations — expensive to buy once there

A real safari island 240km from Abu Dhabi — cheetahs, giraffes, Arabian oryx and hyenas roam free across the island. Access by ferry from Jebel Dhanna, with luxury Anantara resort accommodation.
How to get there: 3-hr drive from Dubai + 30-min ferry from Jebel Dhanna Port
Liwa Oasis & Empty Quarter
The edge of the Rub' al Khali — the world's largest continuous sand desert. Enormous dunes, the Qasr Al Sarab desert hotel and total silence broken only by wind. Barely visited by expats despite being only 3 hrs from Dubai.
How to get there: Rent a 4WD, drive to Liwa via Abu Dhabi — guided tours available

How to get there: Fly to Jizan (SAR 200 from Riyadh), ferry to islands. Local guesthouses available
Madain Saleh / Hegra by Itself
While AlUla gets the marketing, Hegra's individual carved tomb clusters are astonishingly intimate — you often have entire sections to yourself at dawn. Stay in the area and visit at sunrise before coach tours arrive.
How to get there: Fly to AlUla Airport — rent a car, stay 2 nights minimum
Tayma Oasis & Palms
An ancient walled oasis town in Tabuk — 3,000 years of continuous habitation, Babylonian inscriptions and an extraordinary 25km city wall. Mentioned in ancient texts, barely visited today.
How to get there: Drive 265km south of Tabuk or combine with AlUla trip
Muscat, Oman (1.5-hr flight)
Often overlooked because it requires a flight, Muscat is one of the cleanest, safest and most beautiful cities in the Arab world — and Qatar Airways has excellent cheap connections making it a perfect long-weekend escape.
How to get there: Qatar Airways Doha–Muscat, from QAR 250 return
Socotra Island, Yemen
UNESCO-listed "Galapagos of the Indian Ocean" — alien-looking Dragon Blood Trees, white sand beaches and endemic wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. Access has improved significantly and is accessible via Oman charters.
How to get there: Via Salalah, Oman — specialist tour operators run weekly charters
Al Wakrah Heritage Village
Just 20km from Doha — one of Qatar's best-preserved fishing villages with a beautiful renovated souk, waterfront mosque and traditional dhow harbour. Best visited at dusk for the golden light and evening breeze.
How to get there: Taxi from Doha centre, QAR 25 each way. Walk the corniche
Basra, Iraq (Visa Required)
A city of extraordinary history, marshland ecosystems and some of the most warm-hearted hospitality in the Arab world. The Mesopotamian Marshes (UNESCO) are just south of Basra — ancient reed-house villages still inhabited as they were 5,000 years ago.
How to get there: Land border with Kuwait or fly — Iraqi visa required, check current status
Dammam & Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia
Just 2 hours by road from Kuwait — the Eastern Province of Saudi has excellent shopping at Mall of Dhahran, the beautiful al-Khobar Corniche and affordable seafood restaurants frequented by Kuwaiti weekenders.
How to get there: Drive via the Nuwaseeb border crossing — usually quick
Kubbar Island Marine Reserve
Kuwait's best-kept snorkelling secret — a protected island 20km offshore with coral gardens, sea turtles and abundant reef fish. Day boat trips run from Salmiya marina every Friday morning during winter.
How to get there: Book a group boat trip via Kuwait Water Sports Association
Al Areen Wildlife Park
Bahrain's nature reserve — a surprisingly lush sanctuary with oryx, gazelle, flamingos and ostriches. Only 20km from Manama and visited by almost no expats despite being wonderful for an early morning walk.
How to get there: Taxi from Manama centre, BHD 5. Opens 7am
Jasra Handicraft Centre
Watch Bahraini weavers, potters and basket makers at work in a restored heritage village in the western district. Buy directly from artisans — quality hand-made souvenirs at a fraction of souk prices. Almost entirely unknown to expats.
How to get there: 15-min drive from Manama. Free entry, workshops open Sat–Thu
Hawar Islands Nature Reserve

How to get there: Day boat tours from Manama harbour — check Bahrain Tourism website
Jebel Akhdar Rose Villages
At 2,000m altitude — villages carved into canyon walls, terraced pomegranate and rose gardens, and the world's best rose water distilled every April. Dramatically cooler than the coast. Stay at the Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort for sunset views.
How to get there: 2 hrs from Muscat via Nizwa. Requires 4WD above Al Hamra
Sur & Ras Al Jinz Turtle Beach
The world's largest nesting site for green sea turtles — between May and October hundreds of turtles come ashore at night to lay eggs. A nocturnal guided beach walk is one of the most profound wildlife experiences in the world.
How to get there: 4 hrs from Muscat. Overnight stay required — book Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve
Dhofar's Hidden Wadis
While Wadi Shab is famous, Wadi Tiwi, Wadi Bani Khalid and Wadi Al Arbeieen remain almost visitor-free. Natural swimming pools, date palms and resident families who will share lunch with you — authentic Oman untouched by mass tourism.
