Gold Buying Guide

The inside knowledge you need to shop Dubai's legendary Gold Souk with confidence

💎

Dubai's Gold Souk in Deira is one of the most spectacular sights in the Gulf — a covered arcade of over 300 jewellery shops, all glittering in gold, diamonds, and precious stones. It's completely safe, well-regulated, and genuinely offers some of the best gold prices in the world. Every nurse in the GCC should visit at least once.

📈

How Gold Pricing Works

Gold is priced per gram based on the international spot price (which changes daily). Each shop displays today's rate prominently. You then pay:

  • Spot price per gram × weight
  • Small "making charge" (craftsmanship fee)
  • Total is transparent and honest

Check the live gold price on apps like Gold Price Live or Kitco before shopping.

🏭

Hallmarks to Know

Always check the hallmark stamp on any gold piece before buying:

  • 24k — 99.9% pure gold; investment quality
  • 22k — 91.7% gold; most popular for jewelry
  • 18k — 75% gold; common for gemstone settings
  • Look for stamps like "750", "916", "999"
  • Reputable shops all use proper hallmarking
🤔

Negotiation is Expected

The first price quoted is almost never the final price. Here's how it works:

  • The gold weight price is fixed (non-negotiable)
  • The "making charge" IS negotiable
  • Be polite, friendly, and relaxed
  • Counter-offer; walk away if needed
  • Multiple shops compete — use that
🕐

Best Time to Buy

Gold prices fluctuate with global markets. General tips:

  • Monitor gold price for a few weeks first
  • Buy when price dips — set an alert
  • Dubai Shopping Festival = extra making charge discounts
  • Weekday mornings are less busy
  • The souq is open 9am–10pm (closed Fri morning)
💐

Gold Colours Available

All types available in abundance:

  • Yellow gold — classic; most popular for 22k
  • White gold — rhodium-plated; modern look
  • Rose gold — extremely popular right now; beautiful warm tone
  • Two-tone pieces combining colours
  • Custom orders possible at many shops
✈️

Taking Gold Home

Customs rules vary — know yours before you fly:

  • Philippines: Declare gold above PHP 10,000 value; personal jewelry generally ok
  • India: Duty may apply above set limits; check current rules
  • UK: Declare goods over £1,500 total
  • USA: No duty on personal jewelry; declare if over $800
  • Keep your receipts — helps with customs

📦

The Balik-Bayan Box — a Filipino Cultural Institution

For Filipino nurses, the balik-bayan box is almost a rite of passage. A large corrugated box — typically 24" × 24" × 24" — packed with clothes, chocolates, toiletries, canned goods, and gifts, then shipped home by sea freight. Cost is typically AED 150–300 per box and it arrives in 4–8 weeks. Companies like LBC, Aramex, and specialist Filipino remittance shops handle this. It's one of the great bonuses of GCC life — filling a box for the family back home.

📦

Aramex

The best courier service for GCC to Philippines, India, and South Asia. Strong network, competitive rates, reliable tracking. Offers both air and sea freight options. Very popular with Filipino and Indian nurses.

Air: AED 30–60/kg | Sea: AED 5–8/kg
✈️

DHL

Premium courier — fast, reliable, worldwide coverage. Best for urgent or valuable items (documents, small electronics). More expensive than Aramex but the fastest option if you need something there in 2–3 days.

Express: AED 80–200 per shipment
🚚

FedEx

Excellent international courier — good for heavier packages to UK, USA, Australia. Competitive against DHL on international routes. Very reliable tracking and professional handling for valuable goods.

International from AED 100+
🚢

Sea Freight

Dramatically cheaper than air — ideal for large volumes, furniture, and appliances when leaving permanently. 4–6 weeks transit time to Philippines/India. Companies like Asian Tigers, Crown Relocations specialize in expat moves.

Much cheaper; 4–6 week transit
🏀

Extra Baggage

Most airlines (Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Air Arabia) allow you to pre-purchase extra baggage online — much cheaper than paying at the airport. Standard allowance is 20–30kg checked + 7kg carry-on. Weigh your bags at home first!

Pre-book online; 50% cheaper than airport
📚

LBC (Philippines)

LBC Express is the go-to for Filipino nurses sending packages home. Multiple branches across UAE and Saudi Arabia. Offers balik-bayan boxes, padala services, and currency remittance. Trusted by the Filipino community for decades.

Balik-bayan box from AED 150

What you cannot ship: Prescription medications (get proper documentation), lithium batteries (air restrictions apply — many electronics), fresh food, soil, plants, certain personal care aerosols. Always check customs rules at the destination country — rules for Philippines, India, and UK differ significantly. Keep your receipts for all valuable purchases.

Shopping on a Nurse's Budget

GCC has incredible deals — you just need to know where to look and when to shop

1

Time Your Shopping: Sales Season

Dubai Shopping Festival (January) is the biggest — genuine discounts across the city. Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha bring major mall sales. White Friday (UAE's Black Friday in November) is outstanding for electronics and fashion. Mark your calendar and hold off non-urgent purchases.

2

Dubai Outlet Mall

Located in Dubailand, this is your friend for brand-name clothing at 70% off. Nike, Adidas, Tommy Hilfiger, Lacoste — all the names, all the sizes, fractions of the price. A bit out of town, but absolutely worth the trip for wardrobe staples.

3

Lulu Hypermarket for Basics

Lulu is the GCC's beloved hypermarket and their in-store clothing range (for workwear basics, loungewear, socks, underwear) is excellent value. Also great for kitchenware, household items, and stationery. Most nurses do at least some of their shopping here monthly.

4

Carrefour for Electronics

Carrefour electronics are often priced below dedicated electronics stores in malls — same products, less overhead. Their in-store promotions on TVs, laptops, and kitchen appliances can be genuinely outstanding. Check their app for flash deals.

5

Installment Purchase Options

Many electronics stores and malls offer 0% installment plans through local banks and credit cards. This makes big purchases (laptop, phone) very manageable on a nurse's salary. Mashreq, Emirates NBD, and ADCB cards often run special 0% EMI deals.

6

Dubizzle & Facebook Marketplace

When expats leave GCC (and many do every year), they sell everything at rock-bottom prices. Dubizzle (UAE's Craigslist) and Facebook Marketplace have incredible deals on furniture, appliances, electronics, and clothing from departing expats. Check regularly — the deals are real.

🆕 Cashback & Loyalty Points

Most UAE banks offer cashback credit cards — Emirates NBD's Skywards card gives miles, ADCB Traveller gives cash. Using a cashback card at Noon.com, Dubai Mall, and Carrefour can effectively give you 1–5% back on everything. Worth setting up early in your GCC career.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions every nurse asks before their first GCC shopping trip

Yes — absolutely. Dubai Gold Souk is one of the safest and most reputable gold markets in the world. The UAE government regulates gold trading strictly, all shops must display daily gold prices, and hallmarking is mandatory. Thousands of expats (including tens of thousands of nurses) buy gold here every year without issue.

Tips for safe buying:

  • Always buy from shops that display today's gold price prominently
  • Check the hallmark stamp on every piece (18k, 22k, 24k)
  • Ask for a receipt showing weight, karat, and price — reputable shops give these without hesitation
  • The making charge (labour) is the only thing really negotiable
  • Established shops (there are hundreds) are all legitimate — this is not a market for fakes

Yes! The UAE operates a Tourist VAT Refund scheme. When you leave the country — whether returning home on annual leave or permanently — you can claim back the 5% VAT on eligible purchases.

How it works:

  • Minimum spend of AED 250 per receipt at a participating retailer
  • Ask the shop for a "Tax Free" tag or receipt when purchasing
  • At Dubai Airport, go to the VAT refund kiosks (Planet Tax Free) before check-in
  • Present your receipts, passport, and boarding pass
  • Refund paid to your card or in cash (small fee for cash)
  • Most major malls and electronics stores participate

Note: The VAT refund is for tourists and residents who are departing. As a resident nurse, you can claim this when leaving the country on holiday or when leaving permanently.

Counterfeit goods exist in GCC markets (as they do everywhere), but knowing where to shop largely eliminates the risk:

  • Gold: Not a concern in Gold Souk — all gold is genuine and hallmarked. The risk is overpaying on making charges, not buying fake gold.
  • Electronics: Buy from brand stores (Apple Store, Samsung Store, Jumbo Electronics) or from "Sold by Noon/Amazon" — not random third-party sellers in souqs
  • Designer bags/clothes: If the price seems impossibly low, it's fake. Genuine luxury goods in GCC malls are authentic. Street vendors or informal markets may sell fakes.
  • Perfume: Buy from established perfume shops or department stores. Unbranded or extremely cheap branded perfumes in souqs may be diluted or fake.
  • Spices: Generally authentic — hard to fake saffron threads, though quality varies. Buy from busy, reputable spice souk shops.

General rule: official malls, established souq traders, and brand-name online platforms = safe. Random stalls and suspiciously cheap luxury goods = avoid.

Every destination country has its own customs rules. Here's a practical summary:

  • Philippines: Duty-free allowance of PHP 10,000 for residents returning from abroad. Above this, duties and VAT apply. Gold jewelry for personal use is generally treated favorably. Declare all purchases honestly — non-declaration is a serious offence. Balik-bayan boxes have special rules (household items for personal use are generally duty-free up to certain limits).
  • India: Duty-free allowance of ₹50,000 (approx. AED 2,200) for Indian residents returning. Gold is specifically regulated — women can bring up to 100g duty-free, men 20g. Above this, gold duty in India is significant. Check current rates before buying gold to send to India.
  • UK: Allowance of £1,500 per person for goods brought into UK duty-free. Above this, customs duty and 20% import VAT apply. Electronics over this limit can attract significant charges. Personal jewelry for own use is treated differently from goods purchased for resale.
  • USA: $800 duty-free per person. Personal jewelry has no duty. Commercial quantities of goods may attract duties. Must declare everything honestly on customs form.

Always keep receipts — if questioned by customs, being able to show what you paid is your best protection. When in doubt, declare — the penalties for non-declaration are much worse than the duty you'd pay.
